Oral Photography Technics
     
      Even for dentists,not all dentists are good photographers. We need special equipment like mouth retractor, expensive stainless mirror plate, etc. So don't be serious about this section. I have just found very good technics and very useful household items which we can easily get. Let's start!
   
Equipment Requirement  


   1.Digital Camera 

   2.Mouth Retractor(Metal Clothes Hanger)

   3.Car Round Wide Angle Mirror

   4.Tooth Brush or other stick(use for mirror holder)
   5.Double sided Adhesive tape
   6.Electric Hair Dryer
   7.Cleaning Clothe (Microfiber clothe is the best)
   8.Adobe Photoshop software(In our example,we use Photoshop 5.5)
   

 
   
Equipment Application Procedures  
 

   1.Cut your metal clothes hanger both sides and bend them about 90 degree. Disinfectant them by rubbing with Alcohol 70 % or submerge in boiling water

   2.Attach the back of mirror to the toothbrush or any stick by adhesive tape.

Take Photo Procedures  


    1.You need the mirror for occlusal top views of your lower and upper teeth.

  

   2.Take front picture by gently insert both mouth retractors to your cheek and slightly pull sideway. Biting and swallow to let your jaws move in to centric occlusion.

   3.Prepare your digital camera by adjust lens aperture,shutter speed properly,then set the focus in distance. If your camera have macro mode,select it. Select low flashlight. Then take picture.

   4.Left side of your teeth: Gently insert both mouth retractors to your cheek and slightly pull left retractor more than right retractor. Biting and swallow to let your jaws move in to centric occlusion.

   5.Right side of your teeth: Gently insert both mouth retractors to your cheek and slightly pull right retractor more than left retractor. Biting and swallow to let your jaws move in to centric occlusion. ** Turn your camera 180 degree to let the flashlight located in the front area, not the cheek area. Otherwise your cheek will block the flashlight. (Note the difference of this right side not using the left retractor)

   6.Occlusal View of Upper Teeth: You can either use the retractor or not. If so,you need to hold them by yourself. Your photographer should stand behind your head, hold the mirror (should be cleaned with clothes to get it clear and blowed with hot air from Hair Dryer to prevent fogging from your warm exhalation). Tilt the mirror until you get all teeth pictures. Take picture by focusing on the mirror, not the teeth.

   7.Occlusal View of Lower Teeth: You can either use the retractor or not. If so,you need to hold them by yourself. Your photographer should stand in front of you, hold the mirror (should be cleaned with clothes to get it clear and blowed with hot air from Hair Dryer to prevent fogging from your warm exhalation).Tilt the mirror until you get all teeth pictures. Rest your tongue,not move. Take picture by focusing on the mirror, not the teeth.

   8. You can use the image ready to send for dental consultation or cropping only the picture area you need by following this page .
